160 Years Later, 'The Atlantic''s Still Going Strong, Republishes 'Where Will It End?'

In commemoration of its 160th anniversary -- its first issue was published November 1, 1857 -- The Atlantic is kicking off a series of special projects, including republishing landmark articles that first appeared in the venerable magazine.

The first in the series, republished today, is abolitionist Edmund Quincy’s essay “Where Will It End?,” which ran in the magazine’s second issue, urging Northerners to take a stand against slavery.

As part of the project, The Atlantic announced The Masthead Reporting Fund, a new initiative that takes a portion of the fees from its premium product, The Masthead, and allocates it toward ambitious editorial work. Stories, videos, and podcasts funded by The Masthead Reporting Fund will be available to The Atlantic’s entire audience.

The Masthead has doubled its number of members in the last four weeks, and more than half of its members are new subscribers.
