'USA Today' EIC Lipman To Exit

USA Today editor-in-chief and Chief Content Officer Joanne Lipman is leaving at the end of the year to focus on her new book, That’s What She Said.

“The heightened focus on sexual harassment has led to a flood of interest and opportunities surrounding my upcoming book about closing the gender gap,” Lipman wrote in an email to staff.

The book is poised to release at a time many are calling “the reckoning” — women are coming out in public to accuse men in media, business, entertainment and politics of sexual harassment.

That’s What She Said is being published by William Morrow in early 2018.

Lipman is the first woman to hold the title of editor-in-chief at USA Today. She joined the paper’s parent company Gannett in 2015 to help form a network, now the USA Today Network, containing the company’s 110 newspapers, such as Des Moines Register, Cincinnati Enquirer and Arizona Republic.

She was also responsible for consolidating the network’s editorial resources and coordinating news coverage impacting 3,000 reporters.

She was named top editor of USA Today in March, replacing David Callaway, who left the publication in June 2016 to become CEO of financial news organization TheStreet.

Lipman was previously the founding editor-in-chief of Condé Nast’s business magazine Portfolio, which shuttered in 2009.

She has served as deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, also the first woman to hold that title.
