Redbox To Start On-Demand Video Service

Adding yet another variation on the theme of digital video streaming, Redbox -- the kiosk-based movie/TV rental service -- will kick off a digital video-on-demand a la carte service.

The new Redbox On Demand, now in beta testing, will allow consumers to rental or buy a single movie/TV show through a transactional video on demand/electronic sell-through service.

Pricing for on-demand rentals starts as low as $3.99 for 48-hour video on-demand rentals and $9.99 for individual movie/TV sales.

Galen Smith, CEO of Redbox, stated: “Redbox provides our customers with choice – the value they want and expect from our kiosks, the instant gratification of On Demand rentals and purchases, and the availability of new-release content, all without monthly subscription fees.”

Redbox’s move is similar to the direction Netflix made around 10 years ago. In 2007, the mail-order DVD rental service broadened its business by launch a digital monthly subscription video on demand service.

Redbox, which has more than 41,500 self-service kiosks,  installed over 1,500 net new rental kiosks in 2017. Redbox says it averages 1 million rentals a day.
