McCann Health's Gut-Wrenching Film About Rx Overdoses

McCann Health and the Center For Adolescent Research & Education are out with a new film highlighting the growing crisis of prescription drug overdoses and deaths, particularly incidents caused by parents leaving drugs unsecured at home.

The film shows a harried mom popping a prescription pill, leaving the bottle on a table and quickly kissing her adolescent child goodbye before bolting out the door. The story quickly turns dark — with the child vomiting before crashing through a glass coffee table. Flashbacks show the youngster keeping track of drugs in mom and dad’s medicine cabinet and ingesting a number of them.

The child is shown on the floor, bleeding and gasping for air when the scene cuts to a stark black-and-white graphic: “Prescription Drug-induced Seizure. Paid For By You.”

Statistics appear on the screen comparing daily drunk-driving deaths per day (28) to prescription drug overdoses per day (290).

The film ends with a call to “Create a prescription drug safe home. Or pay the price.”

Stephen Gray Wallace, CARE president and director stated, “This film does more than expose what we are missing at home, but clearly lays out the environment in which it happens. I was further impressed with the fact that everyone on the small film crew — from director to support team — were either survivors of, or had lost or saved a loved one, from this global killer. We must pay attention to what is happening and not sugar coat the messaging — or we will certainly pay the price.”
