Spotlight On Super Bowl: Who Will Be Watching And Where?

The overwhelming majority of U.S. adults surveyed this week intend to watch the Super Bowl in someone’s home this Sunday, and more than half across three age cohorts deemed the television commercials to be either very important or extremely important.

Of those who plan to watch the game, 87% will be either at their own home or a friend’s or relative’s home for the Super Bowl. Only 6% plan to watch the game at a restaurant or bar.

Nearly three-quarters (72%) are planning to watch the game live, with 77% of male respondents and 68% of females intending to watch. Females 55+ were the least likely to watch of any gender and age combination, while males 35-44 were the most likely (89%).

Roughly one-third of each of three age cohorts (18-34, 25-34 and 35-44) indicated that commercials during the big game are “extremely important.” The reported importance of the commercials did not vary much by gender. Overall, 31% of respondents ages 18-24 consider the commercials to be extremely important, compared with 28% of those ages 25-34 and 27% of those 35-44.

The sample consisted of 1,000 adults nationally balanced by age, gender and region surveyed by kNOW, an on-demand product from global survey provider Critical Mix.

When looking at ethnicity, 91% of those who identified as Asian planned to watch, followed by 85% of African Americans and, lastly, 69% of Caucasians.

Slightly more than half of respondents (51%) predicted that the New England Patriots will win the Super Bowl, while 35% foresaw a victory for the Eagles. The remaining survey takers were undecided.

When looking at predictions by region, the closest split between New England and Philadelphia was in the Northeast, with New England still favored to win by a 6% margin.
