Augmented Reality Added To 'NYT' App For Olympics

The New York Times is getting in on the action around augmented reality.

The newspaper has added an AR feature to its app, starting with ability to see a Times paper vending machine in a living room.

The Times took pictures of the so-called honor box at a New York Times plant so that the box then could be seen in a home via a mobile phone screen using the app.

“The New York Times is about to expand our journalism, so you can experience it in three dimensions, just by picking up your phone,” states the announcement on the Times website.

The feature is being introduced primarily to be used for Olympics viewing.

“You will be able to see an Olympic figure skater suspended at the peak of a quadruple jump as if he were floating in your living room,” states the Times.

The app is available now on iPhones and being developed for Android phones.
