Google Maps Adds Navigation For Those With Mobility Challenges

Google calls the latest navigation routes added for transit in its Maps platform “wheelchair accessible,” but these routes also can support moms pushing baby strollers.

In cities, buses and trains are often the best way to get around, which presents a challenge for people who live with mobility challenges. Information about the stations and routes that are wheelchair friendly is not always available or easy to find, so to make public transit work for all, Google on Thursday introduced “wheelchair accessible” routes in transit navigation to make getting around easier, writes Rio Akasaka, product manager at Google Maps.

Akasaka explains that in order to access these routes, users should type the destination into Google Maps and tap “directions,” then select the public transportation icon -- then tap “Options” and under the Routes section, it will provide information on wheelchair accessibility as a new type of route.

The option in Google Maps will show a list of possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration.

The feature rolls out in major metropolitan transit centers worldwide beginning Thursday, starting with London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City, Boston, and Sydney.
