Facial Recognition Used To Fine Jaywalkers By Text Message

A new use has been found for facial recognition.

Using artificial intelligence along with facial recognition, jaywalkers are about to get messaged that they have been identified and fined.

Police are installing AI cameras in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, to spot and identify jaywalkers.

The system is being put into place by Intellifusion, a Shenzhen AI firm that provides technology to police, according to the South China Morning Post.

Faces of jaywalkers appear on a large LED screen at intersections. The idea is that offenders would receive a text message through a widely used system such as WeChat or Sina Weibo. The message would also notify the person of a fine.

The cameras, linked into a database of people, catch pedestrians crossing the road when traffic lights say they should not be.

This is not the first use of facial recognition out in the public in China. Police there have been wearing glasses capable of taking a picture of a person and quickly matching the person to masses of photos stored in a database. Information returned to the policeman can include name, address and any criminal records.

Last year, Beijing Capital International Airport made a deal with Baidu, the internet giant, to set up facial recognition for passengers to use to check in.
