Ford Motor Co. hosted a unique event Wednesday for owners and workers to celebrate the production of its 10 Millionth Mustang sports car. 

Starting at the automaker’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., 54 years of Mustang heritage was on display. After remarks from executives, a motorcade of 70 cars, including at least one car from each of the model years, drove 20 miles from the headquarters to the Flat Rock, Mich., assembly plant.

Ford selected Mustang drivers on a first-come, first-chosen team in recent days. Each represented a model year. Once assembled in the plant’s parking lot, 60 Ford Mustang owners assembled for a tribute to the 10 millionth Mustang by spelling out the milestone with their cars, including cars strategically angled to represent commas in the number. After the cars were in place, it was followed by a P-51 Mustang fighter plane flyover.

The automaker says the Ford Mustang is the best-selling sports car of the last 50 years, based on Ford analysis of 1966-2018 total U.S. new vehicle cumulative registrations for all sports car segments supplied by IHS Markit.

The model is featured in more movies and has more Facebook followers than any other car in the world.

The 10 millionth Ford Mustang is a high-tech, 460 horsepower 2019 Wimbledon White GT V8 six-speed convertible equipped with the latest driver-assist technology. The Ford Mustang is now in its sixth generation.

The first serialized Mustang (VIN 001) produced in 1964 was the same color and model with a three-speed manual transmission and 164 horsepower V8. 

Mustang is the “heart and soul” of Ford and a favorite around the world, said Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company. 

“I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car — a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager,” Farley says in a release. “Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”
