Spectrum Starts Cable Channel In LA

Expanding more channels for localized TV news content, Charter Communications’s Spectrum is now starting up a 24/7 local news cable operation in Los Angeles.

Charter will start its 24-hour local news cable channel in November. It will be available to 1.5 million homes that receive Spectrum’s cable pay-TV service. Charter executives believe it can offer more niche, hyper-local news for targeted areas in Los Angeles.

Charter already has local cable news operations -- Spectrum News channels -- in New York City and Florida.

Although Los Angeles is perceived as an already glutted market of local TV news -- with many U.S. TV news stations expanding to all hours of the day -- Charter is not alone in debuting market-by-market news channels.

In early August, CBS announced that its CBSN -- its national news digital streaming service -- will start CBSN Local, a local TV news streaming service. After the New York market begins this quarter, Los Angeles will come online.

CBSN Local will offer daily live newscasts from anchors and reporters at CBS TV stations produced exclusively for CBSN Local, as well as for on-demand content.

CBS’ New York stations, WCBS then WLNY will begin production, followed by Los Angeles’ KCBS and KCAL.

As of last year, CBSN content has been running on CBS All Access -- CBS’ streaming digital service for entertainment programming.
