100 Million Smart Speakers To Ship This Year: IDC

The smart home devices market will grow 31% this year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

The number of smart home devices shipped is projected to reach 644 million this year, increasing to 1.3 billion devices in 2022, growing annually at 21%, according to the IDC forecast.

Smart home devices include smart speakers, connected lighting, video entertainment products, smart thermostats and home monitoring and security products.

"While dedicated smart speakers with built-in voice assistants will be prevalent throughout the forecast, we're already seeing a notable shift in this market," stated Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst for IDC.  "Many new types of devices, both inside and outside the home, now include built-in voice assistants. Not only do these help increase the number of touch points available to end users, but it also helps each assistant grow by expanding reach and gaining a deeper understanding of what, when and how users approach various tasks."

Smart speakers such as Amazon Echo and Google home are the fastest growing type of device, accounting for 100 million units this year and 231 million projected by 2022, growing 39% annually.

Video entertainment devices, including smart TVs and digital media adapters such as Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Fire TV and Roku devices, comprise the largest category, at 311 million devices shipping this year, projected to grow to 458 million devices shipping in 2022.
