White House Weighs Antitrust Push Against Alphabet, Amazon, Facebook

The Trump administration has been considering antitrust proceedings against Amazon, Facebook, and Google’s parent Alphabet.

President Donald Trump revealed the move in a taped interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan and Jim VandeHei that aired Sunday. HBO’s four-part news show Axios debuted this past weekend.

Part of the discussion centered on the European Union’s decision to fine Google $5 billion for abusing the dominance of the Android operating system.

“Frankly, I don’t like they are doing that because it’s an American company,” he said. "I don't think it's good that they're doing that. But if anybody does that, it should be us doing it."

Regulating the internet is not out of the question, but Trump said then “you get into the whole thing with freedom of speech.”

Swan also asked Trump whether his administration would direct the Justice Department to look into the company as a monopoly, and Trump responded that it was "certainly something we're looking at."

Trump’s administration is not the only one to consider action against these tech companies. He said past administrations have been talking about taking action against these “monopolies” for years.

“A lot of people thought it was going to happen, but than a previous administration stopped it from happening,” Trump said.
