'Quartz' Taps Lubell As Director, Corporate Operations

Following its summer acquisition by Japanese company Uzabase and its expansion into AI with the launch of its new dedicated studio last month, Quartz announced last week that Ava Lubell will join the outlet as its first general counsel and director of corporate operations.

Lubell will begin her post in the company’s New York headquarters on December 17.

Currently GM-general counsel of Slate, Lubell will oversee Quartz’s legal strategy and oversee its legal, facilities, IT and human resources functions in her new role.

Following the sale of Quartz to Uzabase, Atlantic Media continued to offer corporate support for at least the first 12 months across each of those areas mentioned, allowing Quartz time to build its own departments and systems.

Lubell’s post is significant as Quartz works to separate itself from its previous owner Atlantic Media. Lubell’s role will allow the media outlet to establish independent corporate operations. Her post is modeled after Atlantic Media’s Aretea Wyler, who works in a similar capacity.

In addition to her work with Slate, Lubell brings experience as special assistant to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and time as political director for the Women and Politics Institute at American University.
