Hohlt Named 'Slate' EIC, Pushes For Innovative Storytelling

Jared Hohlt, the former print editor of New York magazine, is returning to Slate as editor-in-chief.

He was an editorial assistant at Slate before his 18-year tenure at New York, as well as positions at architecture and design magazine Metropolis and Inside.com.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Slate, after an absence of only two decades,” stated Hohlt.

The digital publication focuses on analysis and commentary on current events and produces a number of podcasts, like "The Gist" and "Slow Burn."

Hohlt said he looks forward to “finding even more innovative ways to tell stories and break down the news, in this news-heavy era.”

He takes on the role April 1, succeeding Julia Turner, who left in October to become a deputy managing editor at the Los Angeles Times

Lowen Liu, formerly managing editor, has served as Slate’s interim editor-in-chief.

Slate CEO Dan Check announced Hohlt's appointment this morning.

Hohlt has served as editor of New York’s print edition since 2014. He was also a features editor and culture editor at the magazine.

In January, Slate’s 51-member editorial and podcast staff ratified its first collective bargaining agreement with the Writers Guild of America, East.

The three-year agreement includes, in part, a minimum starting salary of $51,000, annual pay increases, protections against online harassment and a diversity task force.
