Facebook Adds Its Name To Instagram, WhatsApp

Facebook, Inc. plans to tack on the words “From Facebook” to the names of its Instagram and WhatsApp brands.

“We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook,” the company stated. The Information was first to report the change.

Rather than consumers, the change appears to be directed at lawmakers around the world. Many have called on Facebook to be more transparent about its sharing of data among its various properties.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Facebook intended to integrate the infrastructures of Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp to enable end-to-end encryption across those properties.

Soon after, Facebook unveiled an ambitious plan to redefine private, encrypted messaging platforms.

In response, analysts have suggested that Facebook will have a tough time establishing itself as a leader in private, encrypted communication.

Among other challenges, “Facebook's ‘privacy-focused vision’ comes with a backdrop of looming privacy regulation and antitrust complaints,” Jessica Liu, a senior analyst at Forrester, wrote in a new note to investors.

Recent moves by policymakers include New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's call for investigations into Facebook’s “invasion of consumer privacy.” Also, two Senate Democrats have asked the Federal Trade Commission to review claims that Facebook, Inc. manipulated minors into using their parents’ credit cards to make video game purchases.

In July, the FTC voted to fine Facebook $5 billion for running afoul of its consumer-privacy rules.

The company announced in April that it expected to be fined billions by the FTC. The agency had been investigating the company since the Cambridge Analytica scandal erupted last year.
