Dr. Carl Marci, a clinical psychologist who helped pioneer the field of neuromarketing research, has quietly left Nielsen and returned to the healthcare industry.
Dr. Marci, a frequent contributor to MediaPost who guest-edited a special edition of MEDIA magazine in 2011, stepped down as Nielsen’s Chief Neuroscientist in June, four years after it acquired Innerscope Research, a company he founded in 2006 with Brian Levine.
On Thursday, digital health technology company CompanionMX Inc. announced that Dr. Marci has joined as Chief Medical Officer and will oversee and work to commercialize its remote mental health monitoring platform.
The company said the goal is to leverage technology to “measure and improve clinical support and patient outcomes at a time when mental health issues are top of mind.”
Dr. Marci originally got the idea for using biometric technology to measure people’s unconscious brain activity while interning as a doctor, because he realized how inefficient doctor/patient communication can be, and began developing technology and methods to facilitate it. He ultimately saw an opportunity to apply the science to understanding how advertising, media, packaging and marketing influence people unconsciously and partnered with Levine to found Innerscope Research.
“I believe deeply in the CompanionMx mission and in the power of mobile technology to extend our intelligence, improve patient-provider engagement and help prevent and treat mental health episodes,” Dr. Marci stated as part of CompanionMX’s announcement.
