Industry Recruiters Unveil Katrina Relief Efforts

While the devastation of Hurricane Katrina does not appear to have derailed U.S. advertising spending, it has had an acute impact on the local media and advertising businesses in the affected communities. To help with staff relocations, or industry pros that have been displaced by the hurricane and floods, two industry recruiting firms Tuesday announced special Katrina-related initiatives.

Media Staffing Network, a Chicago-based recruiter specializing in both full- and part-time media industry employees, said it is offering free job postings to companies that are willing to bring workers whose jobs have been affected by Katrina and offer them temporary employment until their regular businesses open.

The offer is available to any radio or TV station, cable system, magazine, newspaper, out of home or promotional marketing company, MSN said.

"Many of our fellow advertising sales personnel, including those in the areas of sales, marketing, traffic, and finance, have been displaced due to Katrina. It may be months before their businesses are up and running again," Laurie Kahn, president and founder of MSN, said.

Meanwhile, Florida-based Talent Zoo, a recruiting firm specializing in all advertising services, Tuesday unveiled a Katrina disaster relief effort for ad industry personnel in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Talent Zoo said it was initiating the fund-raiser with a $10,000 donation, and is asking for individuals to donate $5 toward a $250,000 relief fund goal.

The company said that 100 percent of the funds would go toward helping ad industry pros. Talent Zoo said it would cover all administrative costs associated with the fund.
