'Chucky' Reboots As Syfy Series

Cable network Syfy has picked up a sequel series for the “Chucky” slasher films. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association tour.

Creator Don Mancini, who wrote the first four “Child’s Play” films, is tapped as the showrunner. The cabler describes the series’ plot line as “a vintage Chucky doll found at a yard sale terrorizes a small town.”

Series co-producer Nick Antosca (horror anthology “Channel Zero”) called Mancini’s TV pilot a “killer script” on Instagram. Mancini promised the series would be “bloody, but delicious rather than disgusting” on Twitter. David Kirschner, producer of the original "Child’s Play," is also onboard as a producer.

In the initial movie in the series, “Child Play,” a serial killer is shot by police in a toy store, but uses voodoo to morph his soul into a Good Guys model doll. Chucky goes on to marry and have children, but creates clones to continue his murder sprees.

There is no word on specific plot lines, but Syfy did reveal that enemies from Chucky’s past could reveal the truth about his criminal past and the demon doll’s killings.

The original franchise, which began in 1988, spawned seven movies.

No release date has been set, but Chris McCumber, president of Entertainment Networks at USA and Syfy, told TCA: “The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years.”
