Survey: Discovery Most 'Popular' TV Network, Netflix Most 'Famous'

Although ESPN may be the most valuable network to cable operators according to a recent survey, consumers give Discovery Channel most “popular” status and a most “famous” nod to Netflix, another study finds.

Discovery Channel had a 76% positive opinion score, according to a recent YouGov study. National Geographic Channel came in next at 65%, followed by Netflix at 72%; History at 72%, and Animal Planet at 71%, completing the top five. PBS came in at sixth place with 68%, followed by The Weather Channel, also at 68%; AMC, 66%; A&E Network, 62%; and Food Network, 62%.

In the most “famous” category -- which focuses on overall brand awareness --  Netflix led with a 98% score, followed by ABC, CBS, Fox, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, HBO, Discovery Channel, CBS and NBC.

To determine its “famous” and “popularity” results, YouGov culls respondents' data, asking whether they had a “positive opinion,” “negative opinion” or “neutral opinion” as well as whether they have “heard of” a specific network.

The YouGov study came from 7,743 interviews conducted between January 2019 and January 2020.

The highest-ranked broadcast network on the list in terms of popularity was ABC in 17th place. HBO was the top premium, no-advertising cable network in terms of popularity with a 59% number, at 14th place.

After Netflix, the next two top premium streaming platforms in terms of popularity were Disney+, in 15th place (59% score) and Hulu in 16th place (a 58% number).

At the same time, in another survey that estimated the "perceived value" of cable TV networks for cable operators, ESPN came out on top, according to Beta Research Group. After ESPN, came Fox News Channel, ESPN2, NFL Network, and TNT.

Research from Beta Research comes from a syndicated telephone survey among a national sample of 100 cable operators in August to October 2019.
