German Email Service Claims AT&T Is Blocking It In U.S.: Report

Tutonota, a German-based encrypted email service, has accused AT&T of blocking its service in some parts of the United States, and says this proves the need for net neutrality.

"Starting on January 25th 2020, we have had constant complaints from AT&T mobile users who were unable to access their encrypted Tutanota mailbox," Tutonota co-founder Matthias Pfau wrote in a blog post on Thursday, according to The Register.

Pfau adds: "While AT&T seemed willing to fix this when we reached out to them, the issue is still not solved and reports from users keep coming in."

Mobile users in Chicago reportedly were unable to access their Tutanota accounts.

AT&T says it is working on the issue.

"We are aware that some of our customers have reported trouble accessing Tutanota email service," an AT&T spokesperson said in an email to The Register, the paper reports. "We are working with them to resolve this as quickly as possible."

Tutanota calls for net neutrality to prevent network discrimination, but TheRegister notes that this may be premature.
