On Feb. 15, the U.K.’s communications regulator, Ofcom, implemented a new rule requiring broadband, TV and phone companies to alert customers when their contracts are about to expire.
The companies must now email, text or write to customers between 10 and 40 days prior to the end of contracts, and include the date that contracts can be cancelled without penalty; the price currently being paid and the price that will go into effect at contract’s end; how much notice customers must give to terminate; and disclosure of their best alternate offers, including new-customer offers.
Ofcom estimates that about 20 million users are out of contract, and could save an average of about £150 per year if they changed to other deals, reports MarketingWeek.
