Audm, which was launched in 2016 by Ryan Wegner and Christian Brink, has audiobook narrators read aloud articles from publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, Outside, BuzzFeed News and Texas Monthly, among others.
Wegner, Audm’s director of spoken word audio production, Brink, the director of product for Audm, and the rest of the Audm team will join the Times Company.
Audm subscribers pay $7.99 per month, or $56.99 per year, to access the entire library. The app is available to download on iOS and Android.
An audio player below the byline reads: “Listen to This Article.” It also suggest readers download the Audm app to listen to recordings from other publishers. A Times spokesperson told Nieman Lab that Audm will continue to produce narrated articles from other publishers after the acquisition.
The New York Times has already used Audm for a few articles published recently.
TechCrunch reports the Times Company has already begun plans for read-aloud Times articles every Sunday on its popular podcast, “The Daily."
Audio stories from The New York Times Magazine are also being produced and will run in the Audm app.
