To mark the 50th anniversary of today’s Earth Day event, PepsiCo’s SodaStream sparkling and carbonated water maker is asking people to remember the planet while taking care of themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In announcing the video campaign, SodaStream said it will switch all of its flavor additives from plastic to metal bottles early next year to eliminate nearly 200 million single-use plastic bottles over the next five years.
The video created by SodaStream conjoins Earth Day with coronavirus home containment by showing animals in their wilderness homes, accompanied by superimposed words like "Living Room" (lions resting in a field), "Dining Room" (a young zebra feeding from its mother) and "Bedroom" (polar bears dozing on icy rocks).
“We need to stay at home to overcome this,” says the voiceover. “And once we do, let’s make sure we take better care of the planet—our home.”
SodaStream’s factory in Israel produces more than 30 million bottles of flavors each year—most of them fruit variations.
“While we are all going through something so challenging, my hope is that once COVID-19 will be behind us, we will remember to take much better care of the planet we live in, all together as mankind,” SodaStream CEO Eyal Shohat said in a statement.
The company cites U.S. government data indicating that 70% of metals are fully recycled versus 35% of aluminum, 33% of glass and 15% of plastic.
SodaStream says that in 2019 it contributed to the avoidance of about five billion single-use plastic bottles—more than half of them in Germany, France and the United States. Its goal in 2020 is six billion.
