Nonprofit Advocacy Groups Launch Campaign To Support News Organizations

On May 5, a campaign to support nonprofit news organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic launches in conjunction with #GivingTuesdayNow.

The campaign was created by NewsMatch in partnership with the Institute for Nonprofit News, News Revenue Hub, the American Journalism Project, GivingTuesday, Knight Foundation and Democracy Fund.

It operates through a website called NewsforGood.org where 200 nonprofit newsrooms have been invited to create giving pages. The website was created with the intention of helping donors to find and support trusted local and investigative newsrooms.

“This crisis drives home the need for local, accurate information — and a nonprofit business model to support that journalism relies on public support, not advertising,” stated Jason Alcorn, managing director, strategy and operations at the American Journalism Project.

Campaign partners are also working to boost the capacity-building infrastructure that supports the annu al NewsMatch giving cycle. Participating newsrooms are receiving training and fundraising resources well in advance of that campaign.

Through its annual campaigns, NewsMatch has helped to raise more than $23 million for local and investigative journalism since 2016.

“Communities around the country are relying on fact-based journalism and quality reporting to get us through this crisis,” stated Christina Shih, vice president of business development at News Revenue Hub. “If you value these dedicated reporters, I hope you will join thousands of other individuals who have contributed to nonprofit newsrooms by making a donation during this critical time.”
