Slate Launches New 'Capitalism' Podcast Series, Quarantine Summer Lineup

Slate is kicking off the summer season with two new offerings: a business-focused podcast called “Thrilling Tales of Modern Capitalism” and the Slate Guide to Quarantine Summer.

“Thrilling Tales of Modern Capitalism” launched today with an episode focused on coronavirus-plagued Carnival Cruises.

The series, hosted by longtime Slate contributor Seth Stevenson, takes a weekly look at a brand central to American lives — from Victoria Secret to Harley Davidson to Epic Games — focusing on how they’ve succeeded or failed. It often takes into account the consideration of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the new podcast offering, the outlet launched The Slate Guide to Quarantine Summer to recommend fun quarantine-friendly ways to enjoy the season, as summer vacations, family gatherings and other highlights of the season disappear.

The guide features suggestions from Slate staff, such as how to make your own oyster bar, host a DIY Olympics or stage your own “Quarchella” festival as music events are cancelled.

Staffer Christina Cauterucci suggests “acting like a teen,” writing:In a teenage summer, constraints breed creativity. Perpetually broke and unable to get into bars, teens come up with a lot of weird ways to amuse themselves. This summer, with the economy in free fall and public gathering places closed, it’s time to dust off the handbook from the more resourceful summers of our youths.”
