Older Roku Devices Won't Be Able To Stream Hulu

Hulu announced that as of June 24, some older Roku devices won’t carry the streamer. Users will get messages, such as: “Hulu is no longer supported on this device.” Or, “Your user session has expired.”

The affected devices are Roku Streaming Stick models 3420 or earlier and Roku Streaming Player models 2400 to 3100, reports Ars Technica. The About panel under Settings in the Roku interface lists the model installed.

The news isn’t a total surprise for subscribers. The players were limited to using the “classic” Hulu app versus the modern one. (The classic lacks live TV support.)

The impacted Roku players were launched in 2012.

Per the Disney-owned platform, they were the only Roku devices that did not support the modern app. The Roku devices that do are: Roku Ultra, Roku Premiere and Premiere+, Roku Express and Express+, Roku 3 and 4, Roku 2 (model 4210), Roku Streaming Stick (model 3500 or later), Roku TV and 4K Roku TV.

Last December, Hulu added 4K streaming for supported Roku devices, as well as 5.1 surround sound capabilities on Roku.

Hulu isn’t the only streamer making age-related device changes. Second- and third-generation AppleTV+ streaming boxes will no longer stream content from HBO Go and HBO Now.

Last month, Hulu also announced changes to it navigation system, letting users navigate content categories — Movies, Sports, TV —  vertically and explore within them horizontally. It is the same navigation pattern used for Disney+ and ESPN+.
