Snap Pushes Local Business Connections, Debuts 'Happening Now' Feature

Pursuing deeper connections with local businesses, Snap is integrating their information into its popular Map feature.

To do so, the company is relying on partnerships with TripAdvisor and Foursquare, while new pacts with Postmates, Uber Eats and DoorDash will make it possible for users to order food right from Snapchat.

The news was just one of several announcements Snap made at its Partner Summit on Thursday.

Snap Map currently has about 200 million monthly active users, while Snap’s flagship app has about 229 million daily active users. Stateside, Snapchat reaches more than 100 million users.

Among other highlights, those in virtual attendance for Snap’s Summit were impressed with company’s original approach to programming.

“Snap’s continued focus on human curated programming is a clearly differentiated strategy, and it’s great to see it doubling down on that strategy at a time when trusted information is more important than ever,” said Alex Collmer, CEO of video ad firm VidMob.

Among other programming, Snap just debuted "Frogtown," the story of an all-female skate crew from "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke, and "Action Royale," a new thriller set in the world of esports.

In addition, Snap announced 'Happening Now' -- a new way for users to find out what’s going on in the world, up to the minute, at any time.

Snap has also partnered with self-described “healthcare company” Headspace, which will give users access to meditation tools another mental-health aides.

The company said Thursday that it was also adding new features to its augmented reality camera, included a new category of music lenses. At present, Snap said more than 170 million people make use of its AR tools on a daily basis.

Additional partnerships announced on Thursday include Louis Vuitton, Too Faced Cosmetics, PlantSnap and Dog Scanner.

Soon, users will be able to scan Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram and be transported into the inspiration behind its latest collection. When people scan their Too Faced Cosmetics eyeshadow, they can connect to step-by-step tutorials.

Separately, PlantSnap developed the ability to identify 90% of all known plants and trees, while Dog Scanner can identify almost 400 breeds of dogs.

Going forward, developers can now bring Snapchat’s AR capabilities nto their app, while the company is kicking off its Camera Kit with Nike, Triller, and MLB’s ballpark app. Plus, Snap is expanding Creative Kit to include AR, while its new Dynamic Lenses will let developers bring real-time information from their app into Snapchat Lenses.

Snap on Thursday also unveiled Minis, which are bite-sized utilities tailor-made for friends.
