Verizon Media Creates Cross-Brand Initiative To Celebrate 100th Anniversary Of 19th Amendment

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, and in anticipation of what’s to come, Verizon Media is set to launch an editorial initiative tomorrow across brands and platforms.

The initiative launches with a slew of video and editorial series and will last through the year.

“This year has marked a time of incredible change and reflection across our country, and Verizon Media’s mission has become more important than ever to provide our audiences with trusted content that informs, drives positive change and highlights the power of every voice,” said Joanna Lambert, head of consumer, Verizon Media. “We’re proud to celebrate this momentous event in history by dedicating the platform, resources and tools necessary to foster diversity and a much-needed continued dialogue on the issues that matter most to our audiences.”

During the day on August 18, Makers, a Verizon Media brand focused on the future of the women’s movement, will use its social channels to highlight women who have fought for the right to vote, such as NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Educational Fund president Sherrilyn Ifill, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Betty Reid Soskin, a ranger with the National Park Service.

Voting rights will be discussed on Instagram Live with a special guest slated to be featured.

HuffPost focuses on voting rights, too, with a series of interviews with women working to extend and make accessible the right to vote. It explores the ramifications of Jim Crow laws during the suffrage moment, in addition to racist citizenship policies. A video and editorial at Yahoo News also explores the history of the suffrage movement.

The Built By Girls platform, which serves female and nonbinary students between the ages of 15-22, keeps readers informed with a newsletter about voting deadlines and other critical issues, including how to fight voter suppression, researching your ballot and suffragettes and racism. The video series “In the Know Next Gen” explores how Gen Z is using activism, fashion, politics and technology to make an impact, with female change-makers featured throughout.

The Yahoo Life video series “Inspired By” looks to the next 100 years and what they might hold, while a research poll and program reveal the issues most important to women.

Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports also have editorial series, packages and video content planned for the anniversary, including a look at how the workplace has changed for women, gains made by women, and their financial achievements for over the century.

Yahoo Sports will feature a series of profiles and interviews with athletes such as Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, first female MLB coach Alyssa Nakken and WBNA player Skylar Diggins Smith about the importance of voting, voter registration and equal pay.
