60% Of Millennials Plan To Buy A TV Set This Year

Millennials plan to spend much more time over the next year in front of traditional TV sets consuming new streaming platforms.

Sixty percent of millennials plan to buy a TV set this year (versus 41% of all adults who plan to do the same), according to a Harris Poll, conducted for Roku.

“As more families spend time at home streaming, many shoppers also report plans to pick up a new television this year,” say the authors of the poll.

The survey notes that millennials already spend two times as much time streaming content as they do watching traditional TV content, and that six out of 10 millennials who stream subscribe to at least three streaming services.

The survey was conducted among 2,008 adults from September 3-September 8 with 1,296 adults who identify themselves as parents and 827 millennials, 613 Gen X-ers, 393 baby boomers, and 1,822 who are streamers.

Looking at all consumers, the research says 75% of those who stream content subscribe to two or more services, while 47% subscribe to three or more.

The Harris Poll says a majority of respondents report spending more time streaming now than watching traditional pay TV, adding that average streaming hours has grown 19% versus a year ago, while traditional TV hours have fallen 13%.

Analysis from the data shows that seven of 10 adults plan to spend more this holiday season -- with 53% “concerned” about the outlook on the economy and 47% who say they believe it will “improve.” Two-thirds say their own financial situation has improved or remained the same since last year.

Would that mean there are going to perfectly good TV's that could support streaming with an inexpensive dongle which will go begging ? 2nd or 3rd TV's adds to monthly billing just to keep the lights on. Would be interesting to follow up 6 months from now.
