Murdoch U.K. News Channel Gets Government Go-Ahead

United Kingdom media regulator Ofcom has granted a license to Rupert Murdoch’s News UK TV channel, clearing it for launch.

The “opinionated” channel, which aims to be an alternative to BBC News for conservative viewers, is racing against rival GB News — backed by Scottish journalist/broadcaster Andrew Neil —to be the first on air. Both are pushing to launch next spring.

The current plan calls for the Murdoch channel to air only in the evening, for about four or five hours per night, with big-name hosts, according to The Guardian.
