Major editorial hires have been announced at three daily news organizations. 

In one, Carly Schwartz was named editor in chief of the San Francisco Examiner. Schwartz will head the Examiner newsroom and editorial operations at the Nob Hill Gazette and SF Weekly, titles also owned by the Clint Reilly Communications company. 

Previously, Schwartz was editor-in-chief of Google Insider, an internal news organization she launched four years ago at Google. She has also served as deputy national editor of HuffPost in New York and as founding editor of HuffPost’s San Francisco bureau.  

In another appointment at the Examiner, Allen Matthews was named director of editorial operations. He will oversee operational aspects of the integrated editorial program. Prior to this, Matthews served in a variety of positions at the San Francisco Chronicle. 

In addition, Al Saracevic was named assistant managing editor for news and sports. Saracevic will help Schwartz help rebuild and reshape the Examiner’s newsroom.  

All three new Examiner hires are expected to start on May 3.  

Across San Francisco Bay, nonprofit news site Berkeleyside has named Pulitzer Prize winner Pamela Turntine as editor-in-chief.  

Turntine previously served at the Oakland Tribune, East Bay Times and The Mercury News. In 2017, she was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the tragic Ghost Ship fire at the East Bay Times. She starts on April 19. 

The New York Times has named Jim Dao as metro editor. Dao has served in several roles at the Times, including deputy metro editor, deputy national editor, op-ed editor and, most recently, education editor. 

“Jim will oversee the most consequential mayoral race in many years, and the epic story of the rebuilding of a city devastated by the pandemic,” says a memo to the staff.
