Online Marketers Gearing Up for "Black Monday" A certain group of marketers and retailers are gearing up for the busiest shopping day of the year, and no, it's not this Friday, the day after
Thanksgiving. The day is next Monday, and the retailers are all selling their products online. Research has shown that the Monday after Thanksgiving is the peak day for online transactions. It's the
first day after the long holiday weekend when shoppers are back in the office at their computers. Some 77 percent of online retailers said their sales increased noticeably that day, according to a
recent survey by e-commerce company Shopzilla Inc. and industry group Shop.org, part of the National Retail Federation, which is calling the day "Cyber Monday." Many have taken to calling the
benchmark "Black Monday"--piggybacking on "Black Friday," the longtime nickname of the day after Thanksgiving, historically the day when sales pushed money-losing stores into the black. In
anticipation of the increased activity, many online retailers are launching special promotions targeted to holiday shoppers. "We expect it to be a fairly strong day," says Peter Cobb, co-founder of
online retailer eBags.com. The company, which sells handbags, luggage and other accessories online, is planning a three-day promotion on its Web site starting Monday that offers a 10 percent discount
off any sale item, plus free shipping for purchases exceeding $35.
