Looking to hype up its free, ad-supported streaming TV channel, Amazon is renaming its IMDb TV service “Amazon Freevee” starting April 27.
The name is kind of a throwback to an earlier incarnation of the service which launched in January 2019 as IMDb Freedive and then in June switched to IMDb TV.
IMDb TV originally stemmed from the business called the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), an online database of information related to films, television series, home videos, video games, and streaming content online.
It started up on the internet in 1993. Amazon bought IMDb in 1998.
Amazon said in May 2021 that it has 120 million monthly active users across all of its ad-supported video content, which includes IMDb TV, Twitch, live sports and other channels.
IMDb TV's weekly streaming viewership grew 387% between Q1 2019 and Q3 2020, and total weekly streaming hours increased 519% during the same time period.
IMDd TV can be accessed with Amazon Fire TV, a set-top box streaming distributor of content, as well as other similar devices/technologies including Roku, Xbox, Sony Playstation, LG smart TV, and other services.
It is similar to The Roku Channel, a free, streaming TV service, which can be accessed on Roku, the set-top-box/smart TV streaming distributor.
