Alabama Media Group To Shutter Its Print Editions In 2023

Alabama Media Group will close the print editions of all four newspapers in its stable, including The Birmingham News, Huntsville Times and Mobile Press-Register and Mississippi Press. 

The titles will run through Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, according to AL.com, one of Alabama Media Group’s digital products. 

However, the company will continue to send its daily news edition The Lede to subscribers. 

In addition, Alabama Media Group will focus on its local digital brands. In addition to AL.com, these include The Alabama Education Lab, This is Alabama, People of Alabama and the Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile editions of The Lede, AL.com continues. .

“We remain deeply committed to serving our local communities and are producing high-quality journalism and reaching more people than ever before,” said Tom Bates, president of Alabama Media Group, AL.com reports. 

Bates adds, “At the same time, we’re adjusting to how Alabama readers want their information today, which increasingly is on a mobile device, not in a printed newspaper.”

The move led to the closure of a production facility in Mobile, Alabama, affecting some local employees in production, circulation and advertising, AL.com says.  

However, the company will keep its offices in each of the metro areas, it reports.
