Amazon, which had already stopped selling periodical subscriptions online, said this week that existing subscriptions will no longer be available on Kindle after September 4. Nor will single copies.
At that point, the company will shutter the Kindle Newsstand. Kindle Unlimited, which serves other forms of content, apparently will survive.
“Following an assessment of our magazine and newspaper subscription offerings via Newsstand, we have decided to discontinue the individual subscription programs for both print and Kindle, including Kindle single issues,” Amazon said in an email to publishers.
Amazon added, “We don’t take these decisions lightly. We are winding down this program in a phased manner and will work with you throughout the wind-down process to help ensure the best experience possible for our mutual customers.”
In an email to subscriber, Amazon said, “You’ll still be able to read the issues that were delivered to you, but you won’t receive any new issues, and Amazon will issue a pr-rated refund for any undelivered issues.”
Print subscribers will be unable to manage their subscriptions after June 5.
