LinkedIn data found that 87% of respondents in the United States say working for an organization with shared values and cultural commitments is important, with 71% saying this is true even in an uncertain economy.

The company on Wednesday launched a job-search filter designed to make it easier for job seekers to discover opportunities that align with their values.

The filter identifies open positions at organizations committed to culture and values such as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), career growth and learning, work-life balance, social impact and environmental sustainability.

LinkedIn users can assign Job Alerts for these value-based searches and notified when a relevant role opens.

Data from a survey conducted in February confirms the need for this type of search feature.

The LinkedIn February 2023 survey of more than 1,500 U.S. respondents ages 18 to 76 found that 85% say it is important to be “culturally compatible” with the company they work for, with 39% saying this is extremely important and essential.

For 66% of respondents, it is a deal breaker if an organization's culture and values do not align with theirs.

Seventy-one percent of Millennials feel most strongly about this, followed by Gen Z at 64%, Gen X at 56%, and Boomers at 56%.

Some 70% of respondents say they would consider leaving a job for other opportunities that better align with their values.

And 59% of respondents say a commitment to work-life balance is most important, followed by 53% who cite career-growth and learning. Thirty-nine percent cite diversity, equity and inclusion as most important, while 32% prioritize environmental sustainability and 29% cite social impact.

For the business looking to hire, LinkedIn data shows that companies with values listed in the job description such as flexibility in the job listing are getting nearly three times more views.

LinkedIn’s list this year of the Top Companies highlights the best places for long-term careers, featuring companies that offer growth and learning opportunities, equity in the workplace, and strong company culture.

The top five include:

• Amazon
• Wells Fargo
• JP Morgan Chase & Co.
• Bank of America
• Alphabet

The list used LinkedIn data to rank companies based on eight pillars shown to lead to career progression: ability to advance, skills growth, company stability, external opportunity, company affinity, gender diversity, educational background and employee presence in the country.

The company also must have had 500 or more employees in 2022.

Excluded from the list were staffing and recruiting firms, educational institutions and government agencies, along with LinkedIn, and its parent company Microsoft and Microsoft subsidiaries.
