Global subscription video-on-demand/SVOD subscriptions will grow by 321 million between 2023 and 2029, to reach 1.79 billion, according to the latest projections from Digital TV Research.
That includes 30 million new subscriptions in the U.S., 23 million in Brazil and 27 million in India.
Combined worldwide subscriptions for six leading U.S.-based platforms — Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, Max/HBO and Apple TV+ — are forecast to increase by 195 million, or 26%, from 751 million in 2023 to 946 million in 2029.
Netflix will remain the largest platform, adding 44 million subscribers during the period, to reach 298 million, but Amazon is forecast to be a close second, at 269 million.
This forecast assumes that Disney’s Hotstar streamer will still be part of its holdings — although as of late October, a sale to rival streaming company Reliance Industries was reportedly close.
Even at that, the projection puts Disney’s total subscriptions at more than 100 million behind Netflix, with significantly less investment and uptake in the Asia-Pacific region.advertisement
