Publishers Tell UK Parliament: Save Us From AI-Driven Copyright Infringement

UK news publishers are calling on Parliament to protect them from AI copyright infringement.

Lawmakers heard from executives representing The Guardian, News UK, Financial Times and DMG Media, according to Press Gazette.

The executives, appearing before the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, said the government must make it impossible to train a large language model without a licensing deal.

Jon Slade, chief commercial officer at Financial Times, argued that the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill took “a very long time to come to fruition.”

Speaking of the threat of disintermediation, Slade added,  “I certainly hope that’s no indication of the speed with which we can provide greater clarity around copyright law as it relates to artificial intelligence.”
