'Deadpool & Wolverine' Smashes R-Movie Record With $205M Opening

Walt Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” crushed the midsummer box office with a massive $205 million in domestic theatrical revenues -- giving it the ranking of the highest-earning R-rated movie opening in history, according to Comscore.

Internationally, the movie pulled in an even higher box office total of $233.3 million. “Deadpool & Wolverine” also now ranks as the eighth-highest domestic opening for a theatrical movie of all time, and the fifth-highest superhero film of all time.

The movie was expected to open with a box office of between $160 million and $170 million. The last “Deadpool 2” movie (2018) started with $125.5 million, and the original “Deadpool” (2016) film opened with a box office of $132.4 million.

For the two previous “Wolverine” movies from 20th Century Studios, “Logan” (2017) earned a box-office opening of $88.4 million, while “The Wolverine” (2013) had a $55.1 million opening.

Non-paid media exposure of the movie was driven by its well-known brand as well as the massive popularity of stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.  Disney spent a modest $16.5 million in national TV advertising with 3,120 airings, getting 1.6 billion impressions.

The biggest spend on individual programming included ABC’s “2024 NBA Finals” last month (at $3.1 million) and CBS’s “Super Bowl” in February ($3.1 million); and most recently NBC’s “U.S. Olympics Trials” ($773.9 million).

Universal’s “Twisters” in its second week pulled in a strong $35.3 million, while Universal’s “Despicable Me 4" in its fourth week came in at $14.2 million.
