Surfer Magazine, the iconic title that served the surfing community for 60 years, is back in print. The publication put out its first print edition in four years, a limited edition of 50,000 copies.
The cover of the issue features world champion surfer Kelly Slater, who also contributes copy to the magazine.
Jake Howard is the editor of the new Surfer.
John Severson founded Surfer in 1960. But in 2020, owner American Media announced the monthly magazine was shuttering and that its entire staff was being laid off due to the Covid economy.
The web site survived, and Surfer now claims to have 2 million Instagram followers.
Recently, Surfer announced that it was killing all political opinions in its online forums.
“IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THE CONVERSATIONS SURF-RELATED, THE POLITICAL FORUM HERE HAS BEEN REMOVED,” the magazine stated. “Let’s talk surf trips, surfboards, and the latest happenings from around this beautiful, blue planet.”
