Uber Launches Campaign To Drive Voter Participation

Uber is the latest brand to launch a push to drive voter participation ahead of the 2024 election.

“At Uber, we believe transportation shouldn’t be a barrier for any eligible citizen to vote,” the company wrote in a announcing the news. “So with Election Day just around the corner, we’re here to make it as effortless as possible as you begin to make your plan to vote.”

“Get Out the Vote With Uber” comprises a series of in-app features and promotions to help voters get to the polls.

Riders opening the transportation app on Election Day will find a “Go Vote” tile on the Uber home screen. From there, they can tap the icon to access features to find their polling place by following prompts to enter their home address. When they request a ride, the polling place will automatically be listed as their destination – with Uber offering a 50% discount (up to $10) on all rides to polling destinations.

As a patriotic reminder to vote, and graphical extension of the campaign, Uber is also draping its car icons in the American flag (regardless of destination). Uber Eats is also offering customers 25% off (up to $15) off their orders of at least $25 on Election Night to keep them going as they anxiously watch the results. The effort follows a similar effort by Uber in 2020 and 2022.

The announcement arrives nearly six months after rival Lyft announced its own voter access campaign this past spring, which also includes discounted rides to polling places.  Lyft’s program included a pledge to grow its ride volume by 25% to ensure more voters make it to the polls in 2024. The brand also partnered with  Levi Strauss & Co. and Showtime / MTV on a coalition to increase voter registration and turnout among community college students, with the goal of reaching 500,000 community college students by 2028.

Lyft's effort also included donating codes for free or heavily discounted transportation to polling places for communities who have historically faced barriers to voting access, as well as voter registration and education initiatives, and promoting Lyft employees’ ability to volunteer at polling places via the “Power To The Polls” initiative.

And Uber's campaign follows its announcement about a program launching early next year to fuel electric vehicle adoption. That program will utilize an AI chatbot to aid drivers in the process of switching to electric vehicles.
