A statement rejecting the unlicensed training of generative AI models on creative work has been signed by 10,500 artists, writers and composers.
The News/Media Alliance has also signed the statement, which says, "The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind these works and must not be permitted."
"When something is copyright protected, it's because it has value--and that value is present throughout the creation, distribution and wider public engagement timeline," says Danielle Coffey, president and CEO of the News/Media Alliance. "Intellectual work needs to be protected all along this process and generative AI does not get a free pass to exploit creators and undermine the industries that support them."
