The company’s shift towards D2C and performance marketing initially drove short-term wins but failed to maintain brand equity over time, contributing to a stock drop of 24% this year, according to Insider Monkey. The lesson? Performance marketing can drive quick sales, but it’s brand-building that gives consumers a reason to buy again and again.

Jasmine Presson of Mediaplus summed it up well with the term “brandformance”—the need for attribution to measure both short-term performance and long-term incrementality. To scale, brands need to shift from purely performance-focused metrics to a more holistic view that incorporates the full funnel.

    I worked for a,large brand 7 years ago. The message is still the same, nothing new here! There are so many ways to game a performance measurement, particularly using views and impressions impacting sales. Better conversation is the drastic change in consumer habits in how they consume media, particularly video

However, one of the biggest shifts I see today is not just in habits, but in strategy. Many brands over the past decade leaned too heavily on lower-funnel, performance-focused campaigns, where every ad dollar was attributable, neglecting the long-term value of brand building. This overreliance on immediate metrics often led to declining performance over time. On the other hand, brands that invested consistently in brand building saw their performance marketing efforts accelerate, as strong brand campaigns created a powerful tailwind. What’s “old” is indeed new again!
