PizzaExpress Brings British Pizza, Music To Florida

When people think of popular British imports in the United States, they typically think of U.K. fashion houses or disgruntled royals, not fast food -- outside of the occasional fish and chips.

But one UK chain known for its “Proper Pizza” is bringing its British ways, and food, to Florida next year.

PizzaExpress announced this week the chain has signed a licensing agreement to open locations in Florida.  Founded in 1965, the London-based chain boasts over 470 locations in 12 countries, but stated plans to “reach 1,000 restaurants globally by 2030.”

The brand is bringing more than its food to American palates. Pizza Express is also known for live music venues with cocktail service, which will be part of U.S. locations as well, per the announcement. The chain is also known for its black and white striped-clad team (a reference to Venetian gondoliers), marble tables and open kitchens with “Pizzaiolos” (pizza chefs).

"This is a full circle moment to bring a brand I've loved and grown up with in London to a new market eager for an elevated pizza experience," said U.S. franchise partner Vik Patel, CEO and president of Purple Square. "This concept has the potential to resonate with U.S. consumers in a truly unique way. Walking into a PizzaExpress location is a one-of-a-kind experience, designed to welcome everyone—whether you're bringing the kids out for a slice or soaking in the energy of live music."

Originally founded by entrepreneur Peter Boizot in the Soho area of London, the chain took original inspiration from live jazz clubs. The brand now operates six live venues, which have featured artists such as Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones. There is also a PizzaExpress record label, PX Records. The chain is still deciding exactly where in Florida the locations will be, but they will feature full-service live and "live light" music venues.
