One day after being informed that staff members of The Athletic were forming a union, The New York Times rejected a call to recognize that group as part of the .
“New York Times management has notified the Athletic organizing committee and The NewsGuild of New York that they will not recognize The Athletic’s editorial staff as part of the Times Guild,” the NewsGuild says in a statement, according to Awful Announcing.
“Instead of doing the right thing by its Athletic workers, Times management is continuing the charade of pretending it operates separate newsrooms in an attempt to keep a two-tiered system that disenfranchises Athletic workers.
Last week, The Athletic staffers announced they had organized with the NewGuild of New York and asked the Times to recognize them as part of the newsroom union.

According to the NewGuild, the Times said it would accept The Athletic as a separate bargaining entity, but not as part of the existing Times union, Awful Announcing reports.
However, the NewsGuild contends, “Sports jobs are Times Guild jobs. It’s that simple.”
The Times acquired The Athletic in 2022, and in the following year closed the New York Times Sports Desk and shifted its work to Times staff assigned to The Athletic.
