Sanpellegrino Launches Ciao Line Of Flavored Sparkling Waters

Sanpellegrino wants consumers to say “ciao” to its new line of flavored sparkling waters incorporating fruit juices and a hint of salt.

The Ciao line took inspiration from “Sicily's time-honored tradition of blending sparkling water with citrus juice and a touch of salt to enhance flavor,” according to the company. Each 11.15-ounce can contains 10 calories or fewer, and zero grams of added sugars (beyond the fruit juice), and comes in four flavors: Peach, Blood Orange, Lime, and Cherry. The lime variety is also notable as the first Sanpellegrino product to feature the flavor.

With the launch, the Nestlé-owned brand expands its flavored sparkling beverages portfolio, with Ciao joining its existing Sanpellegrino Italian Sparkling Drinks and Sanpellegrino Zero Grams Added Sugar Italian Sparkling Drinks lines.

Ciao will be available this month via Amazon and Publix nationwide, sold in six-packs of cans. A wider national retail rollout will follow in April, according to the brand.

The launch follows the introduction of the Zero Grams Added Sugar Italian Sparkling Drinks line last year, beginning with a rollout in Costco stores in the U.S.in January, 2024. In announcing the expansion of the line to the UK last November, Nestlécited “research” finding that “more than 50% of cold drink servings are no or low sugar while taste remains important to 66% of all soft drink consumers.”

It also follows Nestlé spinning off its waters and premium beverages portfolio as a global standalone business, effective as of the start of this year.

In a statement, Sanpellegrino Senior Marketing Manager Sara Mayer claimed that Ciao! “embodies the spirit of Italy—while celebrating its craft, passion, and culture,”  language which may hint at the product’s future marketing strategy.

The brand’s marketing took some unexpected forms in 2024. Last June, Sanpellegrino partnered with swimwear designer Kenny Flowers on a limited “Swimfruits” swimwear collection. “Swimfruits” featuring “fruit-forward designs” inspired by its Italian Sparkling Drinks portfolio.
