T-Mobile Caves To Right, Pulls Ads From FX

  • TV Week, Monday, July 24, 2006 12 PM
T-Mobile has yanked its ads from cable channel FX after the cell phone company's president said he watched some of its programs and decided they were too edgy, reports TV Week. The company was also the target of a pressure campaign by a right-wing fringe group. In a letter to the American Family Association, which has targeted advertisers on FX, T-Mobile's Robert Dotson says he found "some of the [media] choices we have made are clearly inconsistent with who we are and what we stand for." The AFA and T-Mobile are especially incensed at a July 11 episode of "Rescue Me" that had two rape scenes, a discussion of women's breasts, and a bit involving porno magazines and videos. The program also contained "a total of 109 strong profanities, or one every 33 seconds," the group says. A spokesman for FX confirmed that T-Mobile pulled its advertising. Ratings for "Rescue Me" are up this season, and it is one of the most critically acclaimed shows on television, said an FX spokesman, noting that the show airs after 10 p.m. and 90 percent of its viewers are age 18 or older.
