Parents: Online Safety Our Job

Most parents say it's their responsibility to keep their children safe online, but many also say they don't know how to teach their children about Internet safety, according to a new Harris Interactive poll. The poll, commissioned by the cable industry's education foundation, Cable in the Classroom, revealed that 90 percent of parents of children between the ages of 8 and 18 say they should bear responsibility for ensuring their children are safe online, but just 34 percent characterize themselves as "very knowledgeable" about how to teach their children to use the Internet safely. Ninety-four percent of parents said they had taken some steps to ensure their children were safe online; almost half (49 percent) of parents think the government should have a lot of responsibility for keeping kids safe on the Web. For the study, Harris Interactive polled 374 U.S. adults last month.
