FCC Nixes Dove Ads That Suggest Nudity

The Federal Communications Commission banned from the airwaves new Dove Pro-Age commercials that feature women over 50 because they "implied nudity," says Maureen Shirreff, group creative director of Ogilvy & Mather Chicago. The Pro-Age campaign, which launched last month, is a continuation of Dove's Campaign For Real Beauty, which began in 2002 and has won wide praise for depicting real women in advertising.

"They [the FCC] wanted to see some presence of clothing," Shirreff says. "They were really nice, and we don't fault anyone." O&M and Dove felt that it would be impossible for the spots to be edited--as was suggested by the FCC--to pass federal muster. The spots are on the Dove Web site and are also being broadcast around the world.
