Future Boon: ABC 's 2-Hour 'Grey's' Bodes Well For Spin-Off

ABC got some good news for this season--and some for next.

Led by the special Thursday two-hour "Grey's Anatomy," which teased viewers with a spin-off show featuring Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison character, ABC dissected network schedules for its second Thursday May sweeps win--a 7.3 rating/20 share among key adult 18-49 viewers, easily taking out second-place CBS.

During the 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. time period, ABC's "Grey" pulled in a 9.1/24 against little competition. CBS' "CSI" came the closest with a 5.6/14. Because of the expanded two-hour "Grey's," CBS' "Shark" also took it on the chin--sinking under its average rating to a 3.1/8 at 10 p.m. "Grey"'s showing was the best in several weeks, and well above its seasonal rating.

CBS did manage one win--the 8 p.m. hour with a 4.6/14 for "Survivor: Fiji." ABC came in second with "Ugly Betty" and a 3.6/11.

NBC grabbed a third-place spot, with a 3.2/9. Its best came for mostly a full hour of "The Office," going from the unusual time slot of 8:36 p.m. to 9:19 p.m. "My Name is Earl" earned a 3.1/10 for its expanded 8 p.m. to 8:36 p.m. program, coming in at third place.

Fox was next at a 2.4/7, highlighted by a 3.1/9 performance from its game show "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" The CW offered its usual mid-1.0 rating for both "Smallville" and "Supernatural," ending the night with a 1.4/5. MyNetworkTV aired a James Bond film, "Goldeneye," which grabbed a 0.5/1 for the night.
